I always get an orange in the bottom of my stocking every year for Christmas! They symbolize the gold St. Nicholas sent down the chimney to cover the dowry for the 3 daughters of a poor man. The money is said to have landed in the girls' stockings! My grandparents held on to this tradition from their childhood memories of an orange being a rare and delightful treat for Christmas during the Great Depression. Definitely a tradition I will hold on to for my own family!
